About Whispering River Orchestra
While Whispering River runs several programs, (summer camp, private music lessons, inter-arts workshops), the community orchestra is its most powerful tool for enabling the whole community to participate in music. To make this programming accessible and culturally relevant to the Parry Sound region, where Anishnaabek, Métis, French, and English Settler communities intersect, the orchestra combines direct music education that is accessible to the community as a whole with immersive arts events.
The orchestra’s flagship events are the Summer Solstice CultureFest and Bert Weir Family ArtsFest (named for the influential McKellar painter), 2-day outdoor family festivals that use hands-on participation to immerse attendees of all ages in contemporary and authentic traditional Canadian music/folk songs. The Summer Solstice Celebration is co-created with WRM’s Ancestor’s Circle and incorporates Métis, Anishnaabek, and Settler cultures. Both events strengthen the orchestra’s relationship with the community, provide an entry point for new musicians of all cultures, and fulfill the orchestra’s mission of making music accessible and engaging.
The orchestra’s foundation is the training provided by professional local musicians who conduct free group classes and clinics, giving amateurs the skills and self-confidence to join. The orchestra rehearses twice weekly and performs two further concerts annually plus pop-up community performances.

Quotes From The Community
"Without the Whispering River Orchestra, the Orrville Festival wouldn't have been a success. The stage served as a focal point, uniting the community in celebration and joy. As melodies floated through the air, they transformed the festival into a shared experience, fostering connections and memories that would last long after the final note. The vibrant atmosphere created by the music reflected the spirit of Orrville, highlighting the importance of togetherness in every harmonious moment."

"I have played violin for 83 years. It has always been an adventure and still is. Through Whispering River Orchestra I watch youngsters and oldsters learn to play and join with them in exploring and discovering musical treasures ... an escape from our increasingly threatening world, for players and audiences alike. "
- Brian Oxley, local Whispering River Orchestra member, violin
"Playing in the Whispering River Orchestra for the last several years has enriched my life. It has brought me joy, beauty, inspiration, challenge, and companionship. Creating music and sharing music is such a deep connector; it inspires us when words are inadequate and unnecessary. My deepest wish is that the Whispering River Orchestra will continue in our lives and in our community indefinitely into the future."
- Patricia Poole, local Whispering River Orchestra member, violin
"Playing viola makes me happy and excited. In Ukraine, I never got to experience using instruments before; we only learned about music theory. I was so excited when Brenda came to my school and gave everyone their own instrument! I have always wanted to learn to play viola and finally have the chance for my dream to come true! Now I have my own viola and I play with my friends in the orchestra every week. Holding my viola brings me happiness and comfort. When I hold my viola I know it is mine and I am happy."
- Sofiia Livinska, student, viola
"I grew up in Parry Sound which can be isolating for the aspiring young musician. I was extremely blessed to grow up in a family which had the means to support music lessons and musical opportunities, whether near or far. Not everyone has the opportunity to pursue music in this way, even if it is a great passion for them. That is why local, accessible music education programs are so important. My first professional gig in Classical music came through a WRM performance of Handel’s Messiah, a piece I have come to perform almost every Christmas. That opportunity alone has opened up doors in my musical career and I am so grateful for it."
